Classification
In Athletics, athletes from all of the disability categories represented in the IPC compete:
- Classes 11, 12 and 13 cover the different levels of visual impairment.
- Class 20 covers athletes with an intellectually disability
- Classes 32-38 cover athletes with different levels of cerebral palsy - both wheelchair (32 - 34) and ambulant (35 - 38).
- Classes 40-46 cover ambulant athletes with different levels of amputations and other disabilities, including les Autres (eg. dwarfism).
- Classes 51-58 cover wheelchair athletes with different levels of spinal cord injuries and amputations.
IPC Athletics Classification System
Many of the IPC Membership are aware in 2003 IPC Athletics initiated a research programme to consider how the sports classifcation system couls be enhanced by the application of a more scientific and objectively based approach. Such enhancements would be consistent with the IPC Classification Code.

Classification Evaluation Opportunities in 2010
IPC Athletics have received Expressions of Interest Forms for hosting international Classification evaluations in 2010. Listed below are competitions where IPC Athletics will be seeking availability from classifiers to attend. Confirmed opportunities will be updated to the IPC Athletics website.

Classification Training and Education
The IPC in partnership with the World Academy of Sport have launched the IPC Academy providing training and education opportunities in athletics. The training resources and structures for classification are being developed in 2009 with courses expected to commence mid 2010. In the intervening period IPC Athletics may consider classification information sessions however the participants would not receive international certification as a result of attending. Please contact IPC Athletics via email ipcathletics@paralympic.org if this is of interest to your NPC.
The IPC will update members with progress on the IPC Academy project through the IPC Athletics website.
